Highlights

Across Europe, regulations on the energy consumption of homes are becoming more stringent, for example the Near Energy Zero Building (NZEB) conctruction norms . Increasingly passive houses are also gaining popularity. To meet this increasing demand in the market Schiedel developed ISO-block. This unique construction keeps all the heat inside the house, resulting in considerable energy savings. This system is ideal to include in the specifications for passive houses (and NZEB) and can be used for wall, roof, or floor penetrations. It includes a fire-safe roof penetration designed specifically for roofs featuring thick high-quality insulation layers. Additionally, it is suitable for use with roofs made of combustible materials, such as thatched or grass roofs.

NZEB Pass-through

Until now, when it comes to passing chimneys through the roof, a choice had to be made: ventilation in connection with fire safety or “plugging” the spaces around penetrations with the risk of fire. Which, especially with increasingly thick (insulated) roofs and walls of NZEB constructions, is not an imaginary danger. Moreover, a penetration breaks through the vapor retarding layer of a house, where condensation problems can occur. However...

The system features premium insulation material that helps you maintain a zero-centimeter distance from combustible materials, ensuring maximum safety and efficient usage of the available space. The ISO-block remains safe even under long-term thermal loading. The combination ISO-block with Schiedel chimney systems offers a complete, safe and modern solution. ISO-block has been tested and approved by several independent test centers: VTT (Finland), ChimneyLab (Denmark), MPA NRW, TÜV (Germany).

Variants

ISO-block comes in two package options: HIGH and LOW. Each package is designed for a specific pass-through purpose. ISO-block HIGH for roof passthroughs is often included in single family house NZEB specifications so that the residents can always opt for heating with wood at a later stage. ISO-block LOW is often used extra safety when passing through ceilings made from combustable materials.

ISO-block HIGH

With ISO-block HIGH you insulate the passthrough of your stainless steel chimney through the thick insulation layers of your roof (i.e. the highest point where you need to pass through materials). The ISO-block HIGH package comes standard with two ISO-block modular blocks which fit together, a sealing cord, square rosette, spacers, a ventilation plate and a sleeve. The set is fully customizable with a large range of accessoires which allows to extend and pass through any roof insulation thickness.

ISO-block LOW

With ISO-block LOW you insulate the passthrough of your stainless steel chimney through ceilings (i.e. the lowest points where you need to pass through materials). The ISO-block LOW package comes standard with two ISO-block modular blocks which fit together, a sealing cord, square rosette, spacers, and a ventilation plate. The set is fully customizable with a large range of accessoires which allows to extend and pass through any ceiling and provide additional ventilation where required.

The structure of the system

ISO-block HIGH and LOW passthrough systems allow to passthrough with a zero milimeter distance to combustable materials (G0 passthrough). The ISO-block passes completely through the combustable layer ensuring maximum protection against chimney fires and allowing for natural ventilation to occur and cool the construction of the pass-through. As ISO-block is a modular chimney insulation system it can be customized to fit any passthrough size or any chimney diameter.
