The supply and installation involved 5 x ICS 5000 Ø350 system chimneys, which serve generator sets (Gen Sets) providing backup power to the Research Centre. A key requirement was to minimize the visual impact of the chimneys above roof level to maintain the aesthetic of the building. To achieve this, the framework and outer casing of the chimneys were soda blasted, a process that allowed them to blend seamlessly with the surrounding structure, ensuring both functionality and visual harmony with the existing architecture.

Challenge

This work included the supply and installation of 5 number ICS5000 twin wall generator flues following agreed routes horizontally from existing Diesel Gen Sets in 2 plant rooms on each side of the building then dovetailing going into the vertical risers. The installation required the visual effect of the chimneys to be minimised. The work involved not only penetrating the wall of the building, but also a bull-nosed overhang on the external structure, as well as soda blasting treatment.

Solution

The ICS5000 System Chimney solution with its engineered precision joints and a designation of T600 H1 D V3 was chosen due to its ease of installation and proven track record. Due to the requirement for the chimneys to blend in to the environment, they were soda-blasted to provide a matt, non-reflective finish. The installation at Hinxton Hall shows the ways Schiedel products can be adapted to different structures and situations.

The Customer

Hinxton Hall is the home of the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, a leading research and educational centre dedicated to advancing genomics. The campus focuses on studying the human genome, which is considered the key to understanding the fundamental building blocks of life. Research conducted here plays a crucial role in uncovering the genetic causes of various illnesses and conditions, many of which are resistant to current treatments. The work at Hinxton Hall is pivotal in shaping the future of medical science and healthcare.
